Hanbun means "half" in Japanese, the second language of my inner dialogue. My work in 2014 dealt with the theme of marriage and its resultant partial loss of individuality -- am I half, or double the person I was before marriage? If we are the sum of our experiences, with all their interlocking nooks and crannies, perhaps I am halved for want of the path not taken, doubled by learning to view the world through my spouse's eyes.

Zandra Kubota is a Bronx-born and raised Jamerican abstract expressionist, who left her heart -- and her mother-in-law -- in Japan.
