Loss is an intrinsic dimension of the migration experience, even in the case of voluntary migration.
Loss of reference points, of certainties, loss of identity. These losses require Veronica Dragnef to seek personal resources of resilience inside herself. Painting will become the ultimate tool of this search.
Her paintings are conversations born from a perpetual work of reconstruction of identity, a conversation between the artist and the others.
Veronica Dragnef is a Canadian painter born in Bucharest, Romania in 1968.
She grew up in communist Romania where self expression was muzzled by censorship and freedom of expression stifled.
After moving to Canada, the desire of self-expression became vital. She started painting in 2013.
Her work combines a wide range of imagery, figurative and abstract alike and is at the same time daring and innocent, expressive and unconventional.
Her approach to paint is very physical, a kind of abrupt, rough brushwork, but not deprived of detail.
Interested in depicting everyday situations and conversations, Dragnef’s work, with their bold brushstrokes and colorful imagery conveys a sense of joy and exuberance, a very intricate map of our daily interactions.
Veronica Dragnef currently lives and works in Brossard,Canada."
