Richard is a product of his generation, the 1960's, and as such, he likes to "get out there". He uses mostly acrylics with some oil, three dimensional texturing, and occasionally watercolor. He often takes many months creating and evolving the detail of his pieces.
It's difficult to say exactly what is on his mind, and as someone completely foreign to social media, I can't get him to type anything here. If he did, it might be from the peanut gallery, and that might give some insight into his creative process.
My name is Tim Hogan. I am representing my stepfather, Richard Van Vliet, a new Vango artist. Thank you for visiting his portfolio. The artwork of Richard Van Vliet defies categorization. Not one bound by the traditional, to say the least. Some have called his work “Southwestern”, while some have called it “Fantasy”, while others have compared him to masters like Salvador Dali. Richard Dean Van Vliet (BFA University of Denver 1972) is one of the most unique artists of our time. Van Vliet is influenced by several styles of the 20th and 21st centuries, from fantasy landscape to abstract expressionism to psychedelic. While his focus in school was ceramics, his specialty these days is acrylic, mixed media, and watercolor. Very prolific over the last 20 years, Richard studied under Maynard Tischler at the University of Denver in the early nineteen-seventies, a period which comes through in the spirit of his art.
