This piece is inspired by Rene Magritte. The bowler hat is one of several of his recurrent themes that are referenced in this work.

Trix Kuijper was born and raised in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She has been drawing and painting all her life, but started her career, not as a painter, but as a nurse. Like many Dutch people she inherited a desire for travel and has lived and worked in England as well as the Netherlands. In 1996 she settled in the United States, first in Boston and, since 2000, in Northern Virginia. She became a full time painter in 2001. She draws on her Dutch painting heritage of craftsmanship and experimentation but is perhaps most strongly influenced by the great surrealists of the twentieth century. Influences include Rene Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Samuel Bak, Max Ernst and Josep Guinovart Trix studied painting at the Scholen in de Kunst in Amersfoort, The Netherlands and at the Art League of Alexandria. She is an active member of the Studio Gallery in Dupont Circle, Washington DC where she was Chair from 2011- 2014. In his review of Trix’s 2014 show “Trove” in the Washington Post, Mark Jenkins wrote “… gently odd juxtapositions are one key to the Dutch-bred Northern Virginian’s work ……. Whether the forms Kuijper depicts appear organic or mechanical, they’re placed on stage sets that teasingly highlight the theatricality of both realist and surrealist painting.” (Washington Post 11/14/14) EXHIBITIONS: 2002 Torpedo Factory Gallery, Alexandria, VA 2003 Torpedo Factory Gallery, Alexandria, VA (Juried Show) 2003 University of Phoenix, Reston, VA 2004 Torpedo Factory Gallery, Alexandria, VA 2005 Torpedo Factory Gallery, Alexandria, VA 2006 Torpedo Factory Gallery, Alexandria, VA (Juried Show) 2010 Studio Gallery, Washington DC, Duo Show, “Playing with Fear” 2011 Evolve Urban Arts Gallery, Washington DC, “Flights of Fancy” 2011 Studio Gallery, Washington DC, Duo Show, “Metafisica” 2011 Barry Art Gallery, Marymount University, “Uncommon Landscapes” Arlington, VA 2012 Adah Rose Gallery, Washington DC, “Haunted by Ill Angels” 2012 Del Ray Artisans Gallery, Alexandria, VA, “Apocalyptic Adventure” 2012 Studio Gallery, Washington DC, Solo Show “Enigma” 2014 Studio Gallery, Washington DC, Duo Show, “Trove”
