The main principles that guide my work are 1) structure, and 2) the push/pull of forces beyond my conscious control.
1) Structure is important in the making of my art because, with it, the picture takes on definition and substance. The crafting of a piece often comes from an unknown source, call it the muse, the unconscious, or the spiritual. It is hard to put a finger on the inspiration. But what is certain is that without structure, art that pushes boundaries is improbable.
2) Art is also my place for finding balance. I want to create works with lots of equilibrium AND tension, a push and pull. By balancing formal ideas and incorporating dynamic tensions, I hope to create something both powerful and pleasing. The end product should be harmonious and dissonant, and, subsequently, both challenge and persuade.
Hello, my name is Tony Knaak. I am interested in the healing aspects of space, shape, line and color. Like stained glass windows, I hope for spiritual freedom in the field of abstraction. Innovation and exploration guide me to paint, while my imagination and restless nature point me in the direction of deeper waters. I hope you will join me on this journey into the unknown. For both artist and art collector, the challenge lies in the seeing AND the believing. Come and explore with me!
