This piece is, for me, evocative of mythical landscapes, battles between spiritual deities, mythical forces, the apocalypse, damnation, redemption, hope, and renewal. Direct acrylic painting in layers, Acrylic medium transfers of pure color, Acrylic transfers of phoenix image.
Each piece is a journey traveled.
Fragments of objects, memories, and impressions rain down, drift over, tumble across, and settle on my work surface.
The creative choices I make are about embracing, excavating, preserving, recovering, reclaiming, reflecting, collecting, and discarding.
This process requires willingness and trust to, "stay with the piece" and "let the work go where it needs to".
I follow directions as they are revealed.
The piece and I arrive at our "destination" always having learned something.
From a very young age I visited the Scaife Gallery at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. I was instantly fascinated and in love with art. Having excelled in art class in school, I attended drawing classes in the basement of the museum and never stopped taking some kind of art instruction after that. In my own work I'm interested in searching for and expressing a kind of "Visual Authenticity, Truth, or Honesty". I strive to create balance, rhythm, and harmony using color and composition to create abstracted patterns. Discord is introduced in an organic way by creating layers that can be added and peeled away. Recognizing when the "accidental is actually the sublime" is crucial and part of the joy I get in creating each piece. At times I work images into the fabric of these abstracts using a photo transfer technique, creating visual associations and allusions. The work finds its way on a path straddling design and unfettered creative expression.
