I see painting as a confrontation played out in two dimensions on a piece of stretched canvas. The elements of contention are color, shape, line, texture and of course that vast expanse of nothingness. My job is to prod and to push and to probe and to cajole until that eureka moment when things reach a meaningful visual conclusion and something universal is communicated. And at that climatic moment of realization, stop and put the damn brushes down.

My childhood sketches of The Lone Ranger, Tonto and Superman would stare back and whisper “You can do this”. So I decided to become an artist. While working toward my BFA at Ohio State, I considered painting but decided on advertising design instead. After two years in the Army, I spent the next 20 years working as an art director at three major New York ad agencies - and another five as creative director at a not-so-major one. But with Madison Avenue now in the rear-view mirror, I’m exploring that path not originally taken.
