James Long, American, b. 1953 received a BFA from the Rhode island School of Design studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, Parson’s School of Design, Pratt University and Fashion Institute of Technology, New York & Paris. As an educator he taught lighting design at the aforementioned New York Universities. In the private sector his work continued on projects including interior lighting, graphic design and product development in New York City establishing Studio James Long in 2005 working withSite-specific installations of light, shadow and fog which garnered awards of excellence from juried competitions in the United States, Canada and Spain. This evolution of competitions made way for artistic expression with digital photographyin scenes using available light. ‘Placelessness’ is a series of digital photographs taken with an iPhone 6 Plus, these works are defined by what is observed everyday moments that evoke detachment, as if seeing anything for the first time. Anything we are aware of at any given moment, forms part of our consciousness making conscious experience the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives. James lives and works in New York City.
