"My work is a collection of mixed media, representational, and non-representational, nautical based abstractions, including nautical flags and the lines of silhouetted ships masts, lines, and sheets. The Sea is my muse, and indicative of my adolescent years on the shores of Lake Michigan. That youthful experience mixed with San Francisco’s urban bay living is where I have found a visual home of a gritty, weathered nautical representation. Water and life on the water have always been a natural part of my environment, and elemental source of self.”
The concept/reasoning behind the nautical flags series is multi faceted; first, I explored the implementation of an existing, accepted international visual language; next, I then aligned the ‘letter’ flags in such a way to evoke provocation and/or reaction, because I believe art should be thoughtful. The aligned flags ‘spell’ out words in English mostly, if deciphered, that when combined reference a homo eroticism. Further is the perspective of flamboyant colors and mediums organized geometrically; aesthetically the compositions are whimsical and bold, yet familiar with a touch of grit; the titles and/or ‘hidden messages’ convey a juxtaposition to first, visual impressions. The contrast imposed upon the viewer is intentional, though meant with playful jest and a wink!
