What/who inspired the work?
-- After getting an MFA in painting, I became a computer programmer. One contract I had was to write code for Boeing at the United Space Alliance. "Coming back to Earth" was very much on my mind at that time.

What do you hope its viewers will feel/think?
-- How mysterious it is to plunge through the inky void.

Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style?
-- I wanted to represent a fast descent without being too literal about it. I experimented with different ways to depict a shock wave.

After graduating from art school in 1975, I was faced with the very real problem of how to pay my bills. Back then, one could only sell paintings through the brick-and-mortar gallery system. That wasn't a promising way to make a living, so I reluctantly abandoned my hope of becoming a professional artist. In its place, I sought out a new career in computing. That was fun for many years, but now -- thankfully -- I've retired from all that, and can devote myself to art-making once again. Today, thanks to organizations like Vango, an artist can reach out to everyone in a much more direct manner. ¡Viva la internet!
