My Paintings (in most cases) can best be described as expressionistic and surreal portraiture/figure, often larger than life. Most are from live models and from my sculptures, but others come from my imagination. My objective is to elicit an emotional response through composition, color, shapes and the application of paint, while at the same time retaining the correct anatomy, either realistically or through purposeful exaggeration. In recent years, I have pushed the envelope by combining abstraction with these real and surreal approaches to the figure in order to create a synergistic result, as exemplified by this piece.

Much of my work (including many of my drawings and sculptures) can be viewed at www.steveshear.net.

Steve Shear has been painting and drawing for over 30 years. He originally trained starting in the 1980s in the San Francisco Bay Area at the studio of Jean Packard, a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute. He spent two summers at the Charles Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy painting and drawing the figure from casts and models using the "sight-size" technique, and devoted several years studying anatomy at the Boulder Art Academy under L.V. Davis. Steve also painted with Boris Shoshensky, a Moscow educated painter who exhibits in Colorado, and with Valentine Okorokov, another Moscow educated artist, both a sculptor and painter, who exhibits in Denver and Boulder, Colorado as well as in Vail, Aspen and Santa Fe, New Mexico.. While in Colorado, Steve exhibited at the Zwolf gallery in Denver and the Gallery Sovereign in Boulder and was represented by the Boulder Gallery on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. His paintings can be seen at his website, steveshear.net.
