The wide variety of apples available in local grocery stores inspired me to do "portraits" of the different ones. This is the ubiquitous Granny Smith with it's fresh "apple green" color. I've done about 11 varieties so far and have done the Granny Smith about 3 times, all with different results.
Curator's Note: Often times, we think of shadows as black or gray, but that is not always the case! Here, the artist brings to mind German Expressionist painters, who often utilized unfamiliar colors to describe familiar objects.
There's a compulsion to interpret visual moments for this painter. The hope is that a special moment can somehow be preserved forever. I love working in oil paints. They are challenging and forgiving at the same time. Color, texture and light are the main components that I try to give center stage. And then sometimes I just paint a simple painting without much thought at all. It's all creative process.
