I work with acrylics on canvas using a hard edge approach were I do not blend any colors. One striking characteristic of my paintings is the use of vibrant colors which I believe comes from growing up in Maracaibo, Venezuela and being exposed to the colors of the city, to Venezuelan folk art, to the work of the Guajiro Indians and their tapestries, as well as the work of Venezuelan contemporary masters like Carlos Cruz Diez and the late Jesus Soto. Viewers have found my paintings to be dynamic, vibrant, and funny, with a Pop-Art/Op-Art quality to them at others, all of which are readings that I want the work to have.
I was born on January 9, 1965 in New Orleans, of Venezuelan parents. Sixteen months after my birth my family moved back to Venezuela. I was raised in the cities of Maracaibo and Cabimas. These years were formative years and shaped me and influenced me artistically. As a child, I always demonstrated the ability to draw, model, and paint. In 1983 after graduating from High School in Venezuela I moved to the United States, specifically to Houston to start my college education. At North Harris College (now Lone Star College) a counselor suggested I take art classes to improve my English. My English improved and I loved my art classes so much that I realized art was my calling. I decided to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts and in 1988 I transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. In December of 1990 I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art. In 1997 I moved to Virginia and I started my graduate work at Radford University. In May of 2000 I received a Master of Fine Arts from that same institution. Since the year 2000 I have been concentrating mainly on painting. In 2001 I moved to Lubbock, TX and started teaching part time a Texas Tech University. There I ran a home studio and dedicated a lot more time to painting. I moved to Athens, Georgia in 2006. In Athens I have been able to manage a studio at home and outside the home as well, where I make large format paintings. I have also been able to teach art in Georgia at the University of Georgia as well as Georgia College and State University. I am currently a full time Art Lecturer at the University of North Georgia and also continue to exhibit my work nationally. My name is Stanley Bermudez. I am a Vango artist.
