I was born in Habana, Cuba in 1978. I lived there all through my infancy and until I was 18 years old. When I was a child I would spend hours drawing and daydreaming of fantastic characters. Even though my family was very poor, I had access to a few art books thanks to my father who had a small library at home. That is how I learned of works of art from painters such as Van Gogh, Gaugin, Munch, etc. I loved and enjoyed enormously visiting the museum of art in Habana and would study the works of Wilfredo Lam, Portocarrero, Mendive and many others. Because my political views were different and I did not want to be ideologically manipulated by Cuba’s socialist system, I never attended art school. Therefore, I do not have any academic studies. In 1996, I was finally able to leave the oppression of Cuba and became a resident of the United States. Due to several negative social and personal situations, I suffered some emotional damage which led me to become depressed. Also, long hours of hard labor, frustrations, a bad economy and physical exhaustion, did not allow me to pursue my dream of painting. It wasn’t until I met my wife that I was able to reach that dream, thanks to her unconditional love and support. Thanks to her, I have been able to dedicate myself completely to painting, and I’m able to recreate my negative and positive experiences through my art.
