Ready to Hang
Curator's Note: An incredible view of then authentic market scene, but with all the colorings of pop art and abstract expressionist influence.
I captured the Vegetable Seller (Saabzi Walla) that would come by our block every morning in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi. He would yell out the vegetables he had brought: onions, eggplant, squash, radishes.
We would send a basket down from our balcony by tying it to a rope and tell him which vegetables to fill it with. Then we would send money back down to him the same way.
He would weigh the groceries using the lead weights on the blue scale on the top right of his cart in the painting.
The painting captures one of my favorite memories from my childhood in New Delhi, which was to "grocery shop" with my grandmother by yelling out our balcony to communicate with the vegetable seller.
This painting has gold paint in it, which shines when viewed in person.
This painting will be shipped ready to hang. The painting is varnished and has been framed in a golden open-back frame. The back is protected with a dust-cover and the frame is wired and ready to hang. It is also easy to change the frame should you chose to do so as the painting fits in any standard 16" x 20" open-back frame.
