Ready to Hang

I strive to create an atmosphere of strong contrasting light, framed in a background of gritty urban scenes that I like to call Urban Noir. I take snapshots of my life that pull the observer into that moment and emotion. That's what its all about for me, showing moments of my own life. I've found the most important part of painting is to have the viewer believe the light is real. Light creates emotion, and the greater degree of emotion I create, the more successful I feel the painting is. This particular painting is brighter in person than the photo captures.

I was born in Seattle and spent most of my life there. My start in art was cartooning and I briefly drew a comic strip for the Cooper Point Journal at The Evergreen State College. I then went into AmeriCorps for a year and finished my education at Washington State University. Later I joined the Coast Guard and used my GI Bill to begin work on my masters at San Diego University. I slowly became less and less involved in art. After suffering major losses involving family members, I began using art as a way to release pain. It worked well and I started painting and kept painting until I became obsessed with it. I knew I needed to hone my skills so I joined an atelier at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle and spent a few years expanding my skill set to allow me to truly express myself. Now I work out of my own studio in back yard in Shoreline, WA. I have an 18 month old little girl and another on the way who will join us in July!
