When I was a little girl, I thought that maybe fairies or pixies danced around in the grass with the fireflies by the light of the moon.
I have painted this little red-headed girl several times. I saw her having lunch with her mother at an outdoor café, wearing a tutu, as she was on her way to a dance lesson. That, with the flaming hair, was irresistible to me.
Happily, the family of that little girl allowed me to do a photo session with the girl, and ultimately bought one of my paintings of her.
The colors I used in this painting reflect the coolness of the colors we see when the sun is down and the scene is lit by the moon.
Famed dancer and choreographer Martha Graham once said, “All that is important is this one moment in movement.” This perfect “moment in movement” is what I strive to depict with oil on canvas. Be it with dancers or horses or other living things, I paint the power and grace of their motion, using fluid brushstrokes to show the strength and speed of galloping horses, or the elegance and energy of dancers.
