Painted on gallery wrapped canvas, this piece has steel embellishments adding dimension and dramatic tension. The title references both Gerhard Richter as well as the Richter Scale, in that it is painted using some of the squeegy techniques the former helped popularize, while evoking an urban landscape in turmoil, seen from above, perhaps after an earthquake.
We are Paul White and Mindy Rodman, a husband and wife artist team who have been collaborating for over 20 years. We started as filmmakers, working on short experimental films and videos together, while we each worked professionally within the motion picture industry. Wanting to spend more time together, and create a body of work that didn't require a darkened room, we took up woodworking, creating crazy, whimsical art furniture and furnishings. Wood segued to metal as we taught ourselves to weld and took to making abstract and abstract figurative metal sculpture. Our latest endeavor has us painting abstract expressionist acrylic paintings on canvas, some of which incorporate a steel component to add dimension and an element of the unexpected. We are totally self taught artists. We live and work in Oakland, CA.
