Robert. S. Thurston - Statement
To Look and wonder....
For Robert, developing his craft has been a labor of love. Work became play and vice versa. When creating a painting, the artist is pulled into a place where he's lost in time.
Diagnosed late in life with ADHD, art has proven to be very therapeutic, although challenging at times. It has helped his focus and patience, both necessary for the desired end result.
The creative process continues to enrich Robert's life. It's his hope that the general public can feel awe when viewing his work, enjoy wildlife and the outdoors, and realize the part we play in keeping it all alive.
Currently, Robert is experimenting with other painting styles to keep it fresh and fun, always moving forward "For the love of art".
Robert S. Thurston is an oil painter living and working in Durham, NC. He was born in 1952 in Rochester, NH where he spent most of his adult life. In the early 80s, Robert first picked up a paintbrush at the urging of a family friend who recognized the talent within him. He is primarily self-taught but studied with various local professional artists. A chance viewing of renowned artist Bev Doolittle's work amazed him. Her unique and dramatic portrayal of wildlife was an eye opener and inspiration. He continues to enrich his work by visiting museums and art galleries and plans to explore and experiment with modern art styles. In 2014 Robert completed a landscape course and went on to take a 9 month Masters Art Program with Dan Edmundson of Colorado. The classes awakened a new interest in still lifes and further solidified his love of nature as a focus of his work. Robert's achievements have been recognized through local NH art shows, fairs, and multiple newspaper articles. He recently had a one-man show at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in the Nature Art Gallery. He is a former member of the Great Bay Art Association of NH and a current member of the Durham NC Art Guild. His works are featured on his Facebook page "Bob Thurston - For the love of art".
