My process of creating art varies. Lately, I have been taking photos of the surrounding area in which I live...North Central Florida. The landscapes are beautiful with huge majestic oaks, spanish moss and pastures with cattle. I seek out scenes and photograph them, then return to my studio and paint. I like to work on a fairly large scale so doing plein aire work is not practical. So many things inspire me, that I don't like to do too many of one subject matter and style at a time. I like to do a series of classical work, then a series of abstraction, then a series of expressionism etc. I feel that working in different styles and subject matter opens the mind and broadens the skills so that I can bring a new skill to my work each time.
Robert is a lifelong artist, drawing and painting since childhood. He has followed many paths in life including military service as a paratrooper, business ownership, graduate school and completion of a Master of Science degree. His ongoing love affair with art however, has been the constant feature throughout his life. Rob and his wife Rita have travelled Europe, taking in the fabulous art museums in France and Italy providing Rob inspiration for his work. He is primarily self-taught, taking the occasional art class at local colleges and figure drawing classes when able. He has experimented with many styles and mediums, but his medium of choice is oils and favorite style is impressionism. A recent move to North Central Florida has opened a new opportunity to paint landscapes in which large oaks and pastures with cattle have become a prominent topic in his work. He has received numerous awards and sold work throughout the United States. Additional work can be viewed on his website sowersfineart.com.
