Exploring the use of fewer strokes, and enjoying more movement of the paint. Part of a series of small paintings. Unframed, but with a deep interior stretcher. Painted white edge.

For me painting is a process of getting out of the way. I'm drawn to a certain image, and that image comes out better the less I think about it.

There is a base connection we have to the human form, even in it's generalized or abstracted states. Interest in this connection is what has caused most changes in how I approach images. I have opted for texture over detail as a way to describe the figure. I enjoy anonymity due to the way it encourages interpretation, and concealing the identity of figures and environments is an invitation to the viewer.

With form and color I seek to create an image that evolves and will have some life of its own, that over time remains enjoyable to look at. Art becomes memorable when people make their own connections with it. In my work I have sought to make these associations possible by creating starting points from which the viewer may play.

I've been involved in image making for all of my adult life. The impulse has taken many forms over the years, but my passion is always painting. Originally from Kansas, my home and studio are now in Michigan. The evolution of my work is been completely organic. I rely on my own desire for newness to nudge my image forward with each completed painting. Consistent throughout is my love of starting open-ended conversations with the viewer, and relying on a dynamic image ot remain interesting for them for years to come.
