It is the practice of experimentation and invention – experimentation of materials, and the invention of relationships formed between materials that has inspired most of the work I've produced in the last 2 decades. My search for continuity and connectedness is represented currently by lines and colors and the spaces caught in-between the two. I've been working with the same 20 drawings for years - lines that I created very simply with pen on paper. However, when reproduced and layered, the simple composition evolves from a scribbly doodle to a complicated matrix of lines and spaces - somewhat disjointed yet overlapping. Maybe this analogous to my daily life, but I work to bring order out of the chaotic space between where one process ends and and another begins - the transitions,
This piece is from my Hybrids series. In this body of work I am layering my drawings using screen printing and working the spaces between with color (gouache).
Renee was born in Englewood, CO. Her family moved frequently as a child, which gave her the experience of seeing many landscapes - both physical and cultural throughout the western half of the United States. She spent most of her adolescence in Washington state along the Puget Sound but headed to San Diego after high school, to receive her BFA from San Diego State University. She returned briefly to the Northwest to complete her MFA in Sculpture from the University of Oregon. After graduating, Renee lived on the East Coast and back to Colorado before settling with her husband in San Francisco, where they live and work with their 2 young boys. The bustle of San Francisco is rejuvenating for Renee and keeps her constantly inspired to dabble in new things. The thriving artist community in the bay area allows her to show and promote her work in a variety of different ways both nationally and internationally.
