It is the practice of experimentation and invention – experimentation of materials, and the invention of relationships formed between materials that has inspired most of the work I've produced in the last 2 decades. My search for continuity and connectedness is represented currently by lines and colors and the spaces caught in-between the two. I draw in an obsessive doodle-y way, where I let the ink and pen take control and get lost in a their swirling matrix of mark making. From those drawings, I look for ways to replicate and layer them on top of each other to create entirely new drawings - which I call compositions. It's at this point that depending on whether it's paper or wood, I either head to the press or paints and brushes. In these Hybrid pieces, I use gouache (water based paint) to bring out the spaces between the layers and lines. I love color and when I work on these, I typically treat them like a color study, where I'm pushing a color to its outermost limits until it kisses the next color. Regardless to which series or materials I am working in, I work to bring order out of the chaotic space between where one process ends and and another begins - and focus on the transitions.
This piece is unique in that it has a resin coating so it's super shiny, and the layers are really evident.

Renee was born in Englewood, CO. Her family moved frequently as a child, which gave her the experience of seeing many landscapes - both physical and cultural throughout the western half of the United States. She spent most of her adolescence in Washington state along the Puget Sound but headed to San Diego after high school, to receive her BFA from San Diego State University. She returned briefly to the Northwest to complete her MFA in Sculpture from the University of Oregon. After graduating, Renee lived on the East Coast and back to Colorado before settling with her husband in San Francisco, where they live and work with their 2 young boys. The bustle of San Francisco is rejuvenating for Renee and keeps her constantly inspired to dabble in new things. The thriving artist community in the bay area allows her to show and promote her work in a variety of different ways both nationally and internationally.
