Kimikaa: I have a great interest in community and the colors they create. The fragmented moments they share. The emotions in between spaces, shattered and carried throughout our lives. To notice, to make an account, drives me. These paintings are about the pleasures of being aware of the world around me and telling these stories from many angles. Diving into these shapes and juxtaposition help me push between the paint, my subject and experience. Exploring community with an expanding grasp of shape, color, and process.

Location: Bronx, New York
Studio: Quiñones Studio
Curator Note: “I was in the Young Lords, and one of the points in the original program was ‘Revolutionary Machismo’. Machismo is reactionary, so you can’t have revolutionary machismo. We women weren’t having it. So we made a very different kind of statement. ‘We want equality for women. Down with machismo and male chauvinism.’” -Denise Oliver Velez
