I was given the incredible opportunity to spend about a month completely surrounded and protected by nature. I was immersed in a situation that I can best describe as an emotional tsunami and I kept replaying the events over and over again in my mind. I turned to nature for guidance and developed a deep connection with an incredible oak tree. This tree became a source of profound support, strength, and healing and reminded me I was connected to something so much larger than the situation and this connection contained everything I needed to heal and move past it. This painting was inspired by the oak tree and my deep level of appreciation and gratitude for the support and strength I experienced while in the presence of this incredible natural being.
My first deep desire to paint happened when I was three years old and I begged my dad to let me help him paint the walls but understandably, I wasn't able to convince him to let a toddler run loose with a brush bigger than her arm, loaded with wet paint. I didn't actually put the brush to canvas until 30 years later when I took my first Expressive Arts Therapy class. I was every bit as captivated then as I had been at three. Nature is an incredible inspiration for me and when I paint in nature, the connection deepens. In all of my nature inspired pieces I focus on capturing both the texture and the subtle color variations and shadows created from the illumination of the sun. My educational journey to become a Psychologist included extended visits to the past, uncovering the unexpressed, buried emotions. Painting gave me an outlet to express these charged emotions and discover aspects of myself I hadn't known existed. It also brought me into contact with my soul.
