Looking for the picture that's worth a thousand words
Art is a process of rendering visible the invisible. When I do portraits I feel my role is like a candid camera. I sometimes like to work from videos and choose a still that expresses the person's way of being, or tells a story. It might be something they or their loved ones had never observed before. In the past I have done a lot of "freestyle" painting, starting from random flurries of paint and winkling out the creatures and stories, often love stories, between unlikely partners. The past century has been difficult for painters looking to stay loyal to their craft and maintain their candour. Dazzled by high prices for art whose only merit is its shock value, it is easy to feel left out. Much mental effort is wasted trying to find some deep vein of truth in the superstructure of philosophical sales patter used by art dealers, auctioneers and museum curators, My escape from all this has been my love for improvised music, which at one stage of my life helped me through thirteen years when I didn’t touch a paintbrush.
Born 1948. Recluse rent refugee from London living in France for the last twenty years, and before that in Catalonia, Spain. A few exhibitions here and there, but nothing to write home about. I paint, play viola and learn languages: more or less what I was doing at school all those years ago. In Spain, in the 90s I painted landscape for seven years, making a decent living. Then in Toulouse I explored my weird side by applying the techniques of free jazz to canvas, selling just one painting in fifteen years. I spent most of that time learning 3D design and honing my jazz skills on the wholetone panpipes. Lately I have been getting back to regular painting with portraits of my children and pictures of the world around me. I love the surface of water and the things that clouds do. And now I see one critic has noted "a distinct lack of the caustic and the provocative, the outrageous or the fiercely critical" at this year's Turner Prize. Well that's fantastic news!.
