With this piece, I wanted to evoke a particular feeling of entrapment and claustrophobia in the viewer. This painting juxtaposes the realistic form of the deer with a pallid, unnaturally cool hue. This and the haunting eye of the deer evoke the feeling of being 'snowed in', an idea that is in contrast with the warm, fiery background behind the subject of the piece. This abstract background serves to accentuate the cool colors of the deer, rendering it almost frozen in the eyes of the viewer. I decided to paint only the head of the deer to create more of an emotional connection between the viewer and the piece, accentuating the atmosphere of my artwork.
With the paintbrush in his hand, Noah DeWald aims to capture what it means to be human, as well as man's relationship with the natural world. To evoke these themes, he employs a wide variety of artistic techniques from detailed representations of organic figures to vivid abstraction.
