I experimented with different kinds of brush strokes in this piece, from thick, small dots of paint, to large dry strokes across the canvas and even watered down dabs of paint. I love to paint animals, and I especially like owls, so I painted an owl. One aspect of the owl that fascinates me is its eyes, a common motif in my portfolio. I feel as though the eyes are especially evocative for the viewer and contribute greatly to whatever emotion the piece is attempting to convey, which in this case is the combined majesty and vulnerability of the animal world.
With the paintbrush in his hand, Noah DeWald aims to capture what it means to be human, as well as man's relationship with the natural world. To evoke these themes, he employs a wide variety of artistic techniques from detailed representations of organic figures to vivid abstraction.
