Curator's Note: Believe it or not, this artist actually incorporates well-known religious symbolism into this modern, surreal piece.
Early priests of the ancient world were anatomists, there are countless parallels between religious symbolism and the human body.
The heart is the mother of the mind. The logical process is a progeny of feeling. Even the suppression of emotion is still emotion. So often we get caught up on rationalizing everything that we neglect our emotional state, rushing to logic. You can intellectualize emotion, but the body still has to process it. This is a visual parody of the Madonna painting with Baby Jesus and Mother Mary.
Mreeuh illustrates in a wide variety of styles, often characterized by geometric patterns, religious symbols, mythological archetypes, goddess forms, flora and fauna, the cosmos and plant life. She explores ancient civilizations in a modern, ethereal context that combines animal, architecture and earth to create exotic and surreal visions that provoke the human imagination. Her diverse upbringing informs her work, which centralizes its themes on ancient civilizations, symbolism, animal totems, astrology and mythology. Her work explores the mind and body connection, architecture, the female form. Inspired by the potential of human anatomy and the supernatural phenomena of the subconscious mind, her paintings are composed as visual portals that evoke feelings of abundance, bliss and wonder. Her work is heavily influenced by nature, biology, western esoterica + eastern philosophy. The landscapes in her work feature geometric patterns and layers that reveal a deep psychological rhythm that explores the chaos of intimacy and inner tensions of modern society. Chang’s paintings aim to depict the splendor and perseverance of the natural world, evoking a sense of earthly harmony in all living things.
