This silkscreen print, Untitled (Ocean), was inspired by Vija Celmins seascape drawings. During this time of highly mechanized photographic processes, my work focuses on the handmade process of representation. The method of inking and printing by hand breaks down the perfection of the machine; the uneven ink and imperfect registration render my seascape evident of the process. I am also interested in the idea of escaping the city through road trips and experiences that are less reliant on all modern technology. My print is based on an image of the Pacific Ocean taken at El Matador beach, right off California's Pacific Coast Highway. The endless ocean swells are abstracted through the pattern of colors and shapes, but the print in its entirety is also highly representative of the sea. Untitled (Ocean) is executed in my personal style and color palette while still alluding to Celmins' imagery and concept.
Born in Vermont and now living on the west coast. I enjoy road tripping from Seattle to Los Angeles. I am a photographer and designer, and my prints are all based of photographs I take throughout my explorations.
