The city of Cork, Ireland is beautifully gritty—a stark contrast to the rolling green hills that blanket most of the island country. This painting was inspired by a photograph I took while visiting the city. I was drawn to the vivid blue color of the door and window against the texture of the weathered and decaying concrete facade. The ordinariness of the bike standing by added a sense of life and immediacy to a structure that looks as if it is ready to give in to the hands of time.
Michelle is a Philadelphia based contemporary realist watercolor painter. She was drawn toward art at an early age, taking on the challenge of reproducing magazine photographs and other existing works of art throughout her childhood. Now, her primary source of inspiration comes from her own photographs, focusing on the colors and textures of the world around her. She is also exploring the human experience and the complexity of our emotions through form and figure. Her art is characterized by fine details and vivid colors that blend together to capture the often subtle realism of her subjects. Ms. Sheppard studied graphic design at Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia and advertising at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and enjoys a successful career in the advertising industry. Her background in graphic design and creative direction has honed her eye for composition, focus, light and color. She is an associate member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society.
