My Artists Statement: Abstract work does not so much tell a story to us; it reminds us of our own stories. We may remember a specific time, an experience, a feeling, or the “stimulus” may tap into us at the moment of viewing. I strive for that connection with the viewer in my work. It’s a connection that can speak to different people in different ways - each from their own, unique, personal experiences.

I appreciate that the creative process can continually surprise and challenge me. I use colour, texture, light and movement in my work, exploring the given idea through many layers of paint and mark-making and rely on a concept for a series to carry me through several related works.

The path traveled during the creation of my art is much like life. The beauty of a piece, much like that of a person, reveals itself through the process of “getting known.” The “unfolding” is one of discovery, joyful expression and wonder - much like the way I prefer to live my life.

Michelle Andres was born and raised in Northern California. Her parents recognized her artistic nature as a child and encouraged her to pursue a more traditional course of studies. While working in corporate America, she discovered the art of mosaics and her childhood passion re-ignited. Since, she’s become a corporate refugee and pursues her artwork full-time, primarily as a contemporary, abstract painter. She has studied extensively with various contemporary artists, including Katherine Chang-Liu, Skip Lawrence and Robert Burridge. Her work has been exhibited in Northern California and Bay Area venues including The Crocker Art Museum, Transmission Gallery, Arts Benicia and others. She was awarded 3rd place in the prestigious biennial Crocker-Kingsley Art Competition and her work has been selected for various, juried regional and International art shows. Her work has been featured in local and national publications. She keeps studios in Northern California and Sedona AZ.
