This is part of an ongoing series of abstract ink paintings exploring color, light, and shapes. I created this piece in several layers. Although these paintings are flat in texture, they still have a lot of depth visually and have a 3D effect in person. The Yupo paper that I used for this piece is a unique synthetic paper, machine-made in the USA of 100% polypropylene. It is waterproof, stain resistant, and extremely strong and durable. It resists tearing and buckling and lays flat. Because of the non-absorbant nature of the paper, no white paint was used. Please note that all computer monitors are different. The colors in this painting may differ ever so slightly from what you see on your screen.I have sprayed it with a UV Resistant Clear Gloss, but would recommend framing it behind glass. It will come shipped in an archival clear plastic bag, placed between two pieces of sturdy cardboard in a stay flat mailer.

Artist Statement:

Both the concrete and abstract dualisms between the mind and body and how we construct our sense of self are of great fascination and importance to me. My work deals with the layers and connections between these two states of being: where they intersect and where they diverge. Together, painting and photography are my mediums used to illustrate themes such as intimacy, vulnerability, isolation, and the temporality of humanity. The differing construction techniques of materials and mediums aid in my replication of a person’s mental state. I begin with a photograph and manipulate it to portray the body as a concrete representation of internal consciousness and ambiguity. I then translate this image into a painting through layers of transparent washes, oil paint, and thick texture. Exploring the weight of space, these layers often mask or encroach upon subjects, creating an altered and intangible reality.

I am a Houston, TX based artist. My paintings revolve around themes of the mind and body, plants/nature, and expressive abstraction. I am always trying out new mediums but I mostly use oil paint, watercolors, gouache, and alcohol ink. I received my Bachelors degrees in both Painting and Photography in May 2010, and I completed my Masters in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in May 2012. Creating is a necessity for me, and I don't know who I would be without it. I crave that artistic release. I love connecting with people through my art, because each piece I create is a little part of me. I hope you like what you see, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out!
