Meg Marano collects oddities and makes art in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in Ithaca, New York to a family of natural artists, she began taking advanced art courses in high school and studied theatre production in college before spending several years touring in the music industry. These years spent in theatre and music led her to a deep fascination with facial expressions, her portrayals of which have quickly become her most recognizable work. As an emotional representation of how she views people, Marano’s faces are characterized by spooky expressions and playful colors. She is a student of her surroundings, equally comfortable drawing influence from Rodin and O’Keeffe as she is from the vintage medical texts and fish skeletons which line the walls of her Nashville library. Primarily working with oil paints, Marano spent years expressing control through smooth, perfectly blended color work. In recent months, she has allowed herself to move on to more exploratory and less controlled work in watercolor, sculpture and other mediums, marking a period of personal as well as artistic growth. Since her first solo show in October 2013 (Keep It In Your Room, Nashville TN), Marano has been working on commissions and developing an interactive experience and new work for her next show.
