The Victorian Era gave flowers a whole new life, enhancing the meaning of each stem in creating an important message. Combining the seasonality and flower meaning provides the still life with its subject. This still life of Summer, or Estate in Italian, features dahlias, gladiolus, peonies, roses, and lilies together signifying commited and undying love as well as prosperity. (Two of four seasonal still lifes)
My name is Mayhew Lester. I am an part-time traveler, full-time art teacher. My father was an awarded amateur painter. As a child, I watched over his shoulder as he recreated landscapes and architecture. I spent my early childhood in England where my father took me to museums and galleries. His skill and eagerness greatly influenced my perspective. As a teenager, I continued my education through evening courses at Southern Methodist University and other local venues. At the University of Texas, I majored in history and education, spending extensive time at the Blanton Museum & Harry Ransom Center. I student taught in AP Art History, sharing my love for art and its impact on our world. I currently work as an elementary art teacher, encouraging students to explore their creative interests through a variety of mediums and subjects areas. I travel extensively over my breaks to encounter new cultures and ideas to incorporate in my art and that of my students.
