Curator's Note: Created in the midst of winter, the color suggests an absence of life and energy.

I thought this piece could fit into a lot of design options. It has a magic quality that allows viewers to fill in some of the blanks, if those viewers have some creativity.

I created this piece as part of a winter series of paintings that expressed a sense of time and place.

My inspiration in creating this piece was one of those moments when the environment and mental anguish meet.

My name is Matt Bertles. I have been painting professionally for 30 years, with work sold to private collectors and corporate collections. In April 2014 my house burned to the ground, destroying decades of paintings, photos and my entire studio. The work I am promoting here is all new and in a much more elaborate style than anything I have done before. I will continue to add new work on this site and the prices will increase to what my other work had been selling at prior to the fire, but in the meantime, some of these new works are affordable and would make an impact in a personal collection.
