The story of life explained: bottom right corner, the yellow represents the Holy Spirit creating life. The gray next to it is the sin nature affecting our lives. The bottom third of the art is young life with happy colors. The middle section is adulthood with green representing labor and fruitfulness. You will find silver during these years. The colors on the outer edges show there are happy times during this period. The top shows the elderly years. You will find gold during these years. The brown indicates knowledge that death is near. The gray above it represents death. Pink is the flesh. Above these is yellow representing eternal life. Yellow throughout the art shows joy and God's presence realized. Bright red shows pain. The fine lines are light and often good times. The thick black lines are the harshness of life but also God's ultimate control in which we can take comfort. Two figures at the bottom are worshiping.
Using mixed media, I am able to accomplish the desired effect using 100 lb Bristol art paper.
My name is Mary Sperling. I grew up in a household where my mother did oil paintings and when I expressed interest, she provided me with canvas and paints. I am self-taught and as a child, looked up to my uncle who is also an artist. Enduring an illness like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia for more than a decade is rough but there are also some good things I'm not sure I would have experienced otherwise. Maybe for me it took a weakened body to experience the heightened intensity I now do by certain colors, shapes, and sounds. I love color and the way it makes me feel. A few years ago, I remember certain colors coming alive to me. They drew my attention and gave me pleasure to look at. I started experimenting with them. As of late, I've started a new type of art using mixed media. I haven't seen this art style anywhere else and just enjoy expressing myself with bright color and contrasting dark lines.
