Why am I an artist? Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by the marks a pen or pencil made on a piece of paper. I even loved writing by hand. My mother said my first words were “me-me” which meant “Give me a pencil.” I always drew, I guess, but had no opportunity to really study art until I was grown. The beauty I see around me in nature causes me to want to express this beauty in my own way. I love color – especially brilliant, warm color, and pastel is the perfect medium for me. The colors I want are right there–immediate and vibrating. It thrills me to play one color against another – to see shapes become forms by just the right placement of shadow and highlight. I love solving the problems I’m faced with and stretching my limits just a bit more each painting. I become more confident with each painting and more willing to experiment each day. I am growing as an artist finally because I now have the time to do it.
Nature is my favorite subject - either in painting or drawing. My strongest design element is shape - both positive and negative. That is one reason why I love to depict trees in any season, especially bare trees that reach their limbs up to the sky leaving spaces through which the sky peeks through. There is a certain human aspect in a tree shaped by its environment. Variations in line, hue, and value also mark my work. My personality is calm and steady, and it always shows up in my art.
