My process consists of following the advice of my wonderful teacher, Sam Feinstein, who said "cover the whites:" He meant cover the surface you were working on, paper or canvas or wood or cardboard. And he meant with any and all colors. So I start with that ideaand cover the whole surface with many colors in many different areas and many different gestures. Then I begin to see shapes emerging out of the color, and they lead me to create something that a viewer can recognize.
I use palette knives - small ones make distinct marks in various ways, and large ones can create more diffuse areas. I use the tip, the flat side and the edge. I use brushes only on occasion, as I feel I have more control with the knife.
My name is Marsha Heller. I am a Vango artist. Thank you for visiting my portfolio. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, doodling, finger painting, colored pencils, pen and ink. Then I was introduced to oil paint, which changed my life. I found the color and the brushes and the palette knives incredibly seductive, and have worked in this medium for many years now. I also work in pastels and wax, which I love for the serendipity of the flowing wax, but I always return to oil paint. I am inspired by nature, from the smallest blades of grass to the sky. I am informed by every painting I have ever seen,
