Ready to Hang

My favorite color is red, or so I thought. Upon reflection, I realize that I've chosen orange most of my life, even when a child. Orange is bright, cheerful, upbeat and sometimes complicated. But it's almost always bold. This painting was created using many thin layers of acrylic glazing with various colors. The depth and motion captured is a product of color, texture, shapes and values, light on dark, dark on light. This painting is a wonderful shade of interesting - it can perk up an otherwise neutral or dark space, or compliment other colorful elements around it.

It is gallery wrapped and painted on all sides, The unusual depth - 2.5 inches - adds to its statement on the wall. Ready to hang.

My work is about color and movement, echoing the beauty and rhythms of nature and life. Most of my paintings are created with many thin layers of acrylic glazing, producing complex and beautiful colors with a lot of luminosity. Textures and shapes form with each new layer added. Each piece takes a long time to design and finish, as every layer must completely dry before painting another. Hues sitting on top of each other, rather than mixed or applied thicker, create new colors and a lot of depth and texture. When the painting is finished colors and shapes appear through all the earlier layers. I have been an artist more than 25 years. I studied photography and painting at American University, the Washington Studio School and the Smithsonian. During my years as a professional underwater photographer my work was exhibited, published and internationally awarded. I began painting early in my art career - first oils on canvas, capturing my images of sea life. About thirteen years ago I transitioned to acrylics on canvas, and moved from realism to abstract. No longer diving and photographing, my love of color and shape continues through my paintings. Follow my work at artbymarna.com. My work - photographs and paintings - are in corporate and private collections nationwide including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, San Francisco and Santa Fe, where I now reside. I've exhibited in many shows and galleries, most recently at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art in Las Vegas and Eldorado Open Studio in Santa Fe.
