Ready to Hang

This piece is a combination of several different methods of painting. There are many glazed layers, especially with softer less contrast hues. The more brushed area has lots of texture, but it is somewhat subtle. The bright bolder colors draw the eye upward, and the various lines and shapes contain the color and create focus. I love that this painting is bright, bold and colorful, yet has a softer part that balances the view. A definite statement, this painting can carry an entire wall or room with its color pallate or fit into any color scheme with its variety.

The extra deep sides (2 1/2 inches) are painted very dark and the entire piece has been top coated with a gloss. This helps the painting pop on the wall. Gallery wrapped, it is ready to hang.

My work is about color and movement, echoing the beauty and rhythms of nature and life. Most of my paintings are created with many thin layers of acrylic glazing, producing complex and beautiful colors with a lot of luminosity. Textures and shapes form with each new layer added. Each piece takes a long time to design and finish, as every layer must completely dry before painting another. Hues sitting on top of each other, rather than mixed or applied thicker, create new colors and a lot of depth and texture. When the painting is finished colors and shapes appear through all the earlier layers. I have been an artist more than 25 years. I studied photography and painting at American University, the Washington Studio School and the Smithsonian. During my years as a professional underwater photographer my work was exhibited, published and internationally awarded. I began painting early in my art career - first oils on canvas, capturing my images of sea life. About thirteen years ago I transitioned to acrylics on canvas, and moved from realism to abstract. No longer diving and photographing, my love of color and shape continues through my paintings. Follow my work at artbymarna.com. My work - photographs and paintings - are in corporate and private collections nationwide including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, San Francisco and Santa Fe, where I now reside. I've exhibited in many shows and galleries, most recently at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art in Las Vegas and Eldorado Open Studio in Santa Fe.
