Ready to Hang
In life we take many paths and journeys. Who doesn't want to find their own heart as well as the heart of another? Sometimes the route seems simple and obvious - but we take a complex way of getting there.
I started this painting with texture on blank canvases. By pouring thickened acrylic medium and letting it dry into a raised pattern, the heavy texture and trails were set. After painting multiple layers of white and off-white, each area was individually painted with many thin glazed layers of color. Oranges, black, browns, blues, green, yellows all combined, giving depth and movement. The textures of the white paths show the complexity of the journey. The heart, off to the side but very visible, draws the viewer's eye to the end of the trip ... or is it the beginning?
This diptych has been coated with a gloss varnish for protection, water resistance and color fastness. All sides are painted to match the design. It is gallery wrapped and ready to hang.
My work is about color and movement, echoing the beauty and rhythms of nature and life. Most of my paintings are created with many thin layers of acrylic glazing, producing complex and beautiful colors with a lot of luminosity. Textures and shapes form with each new layer added. Each piece takes a long time to design and finish, as every layer must completely dry before painting another. Hues sitting on top of each other, rather than mixed or applied thicker, create new colors and a lot of depth and texture. When the painting is finished colors and shapes appear through all the earlier layers. I have been an artist more than 25 years. I studied photography and painting at American University, the Washington Studio School and the Smithsonian. During my years as a professional underwater photographer my work was exhibited, published and internationally awarded. I began painting early in my art career - first oils on canvas, capturing my images of sea life. About thirteen years ago I transitioned to acrylics on canvas, and moved from realism to abstract. No longer diving and photographing, my love of color and shape continues through my paintings. Follow my work at artbymarna.com. My work - photographs and paintings - are in corporate and private collections nationwide including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, San Francisco and Santa Fe, where I now reside. I've exhibited in many shows and galleries, most recently at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art in Las Vegas and Eldorado Open Studio in Santa Fe.
