This is an abstracted figure drawing on a very textured paper surface mounted to rag board. The medium is graphite and oil stick. I have always been interested in the figure as subject matter. During a period of lots of live figure drawing, I began to overlap the drawings and distortions resulted. Since then, my figures have been very abstracted.
My current work is graphite and oil on paper or wood, which has been heavily coated with gesso. The figurative work centers on elements of the human form, transfigured. I begin with figures in fairly conventional incarnations, then add and subtract and exaggerate. The figure can metamorphose into roots, seeds, bones in soil, objects floating in water, ghosts dropping out of sky. They become biomorphic forms with missing parts. There is a sense of the figures being there but now, mutated, they imply some strange history. My landscapes use the same techniques and materials and are done from life on sight. My influences include organic forms, both human and otherwise, roots, bones, fossils, Egon Schiele. I live and work in Asheville, NC.
