When creating this piece I built layers upon layers of paint with a palette knife and then began scratching through to the shades beneath. Each stroke builds upon its neighbors while interacting both freely and independently.
At a young age, I discovered the magic that happened when I picked up a pencil or a paintbrush. I didn't quite understand what was happening: all I knew was that in those moments I could let my mind run free and create anything I wanted. In those times, life was still. The world was quiet, but inside of me, a visceral, vibrant, energetic being was waiting to burst out. I am extremely blessed to share my excitement of the visual arts with children as a K-5 art educator. Picasso said, “All children are born artists, the challenge is to continue to be one when you grow up.” I guess for some the value of creativity fades over time. For some, it maybe snuffed out by fear. For me, I know that it is my lifeline.
