This is an oil painting on a thick paper/board depicting a street scene from the small town of Grinnell, Iowa where I attended college. Because it is painted on a harder surface than canvas, I was able to use a rubber tool to remove paint/draw lines in the paint, giving it a Van Gogh type of feel. There are only a handful of paintings I completed using this method and I love them all.
Laura Makinen was born (1980) and raised in the city of Chicago. Art and music have been instrumental throughout her life. At Grinnell College, while pursuing a degree in Religious Studies, Laura took began a serious love affair with painting. After finishing her first degree, Laura completed a BFA in Painting at the Massachusetts College of Art and subsequently moved to San Francisco. Although she fell in love with the Bay Area, Laura is currently residing with her family back home in Chicago, where she recently completed a yoga teacher training and is painting up a storm. Over the years, she has created a significant body of both figurative and abstract work, and has participated in group shows throughout the United States.
