This is a quiet spot along Jenkins Creek near Aripeka in Hernando County, Fla. Beyond the deep blue water is a grassy marsh, an estuary for small marine life. A school of jumping mullet may occasionally break the stillness of the water.
I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Anniston, Ala. A culture of religion, superstition and spirituality helped shape my creativity. My interest in art stems from my late father, a self-taught folk artist and commercial sign painter. I learned to draw, mix colors and handle a brush by watching him, sometimes getting into trouble as a toddler for decorating the walls of our home with his paint – my first murals. My father was of the same generation and culture as the celebrated Florida Highwaymen.
