Reflecting on my experiences from my deployment to Iraq in 2009, I remember being surrounded by such destruction and sadness. I knew very little about the politics of it, only that I wanted to serve my country and try to make a brighter future for myself. I was saddened by the devastation but did not pass judgement for that which I did not fully understand. I did, however, recognize that there was still beauty in everything. On the walls, in the skies, in the small details, there was still hope for beautiful expression. It is something that defies brute strength and fear. Humanity's need for peace and beauty will stand no matter what.
