I used to have my studio on the Big Island of Hawaii. I would frequently drive over the middle of the island through what is called the Saddle Road. As I drove past the peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea I would always be amazed at the way the clouds were forced over Mauna Kea by the trade winds coming in from the Hilo side of the island.
The very first painting I did in this style was trying to capture the wild chaos of the clouds over those mountains. That is how I ended up with my current chaotic, angular mark making. This specific painting was done from memory while reflecting upon the emotions those mountains evoked in me when attempting to capture it on canvas that very first time.
