I used to have my studio on the Big Island of Hawaii. There is a single road that crosses the island from east to west in between the two big mountains that compose the island. This island is called the saddle road. When you reach the highest altitude of the road you are driving through a landscape formed by lava flows from just the past 50-100 years. Dark black and barren... but at one point you will pass a cinder dome from a much older lava flow that is covered in vegetation. Due to the way it was raised above the ground it was spared in the last lava flow over the area and now sits like a beautiful green half dome in the middle of barren landscape. This imagery always left a big impact on me whenever I would drive past it. I have attempted to paint and draw this piece of the landscape before, but I think this painting is by far the best expression of my own memories and thoughts about that place.
