Many colors were used to evoke a mood on this large portrait painting.

The biggest problem to exist as an artist has always been the struggle to make a living. For years I tried to balance work and art, with art eventually taking a back seat. After many years, I've finally found a place where I can live simply, cheaply, peacefully and most important, creatively. I've split my time between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, CA for the past four years. It's long been a place that attracts artists and musicians, and the wide open spaces and interesting characters feed me with inspiration. Besides a big studio, I have room for a growing number of odd animals to keep me company. For now I'm giving myself the freedom to explore and follow my whims, rather than agonize over creating a "cohesive body of work". Yet somehow, without the agony, I think it's coming together and making sense. Last year I lucked into a trade for an old beat up kiln, and have been teaching my self how to work with clay. I enjoy bouncing between 2D and 3D ways of thinking. Working with clay and abstraction in paint is gradually transforming my figurative work. I'm enjoying the journey.
